SGARs are a class of poisons commonly used by pest control companies to kill rodents. The problem is that the mouse or rat that ingests this poison does not die for several days. Instead, they are weakened and often return to the outdoors in search of water. This makes them easy prey for raptors, pets and many other kinds of wildlife. Because SGARs bioaccumulate in the body of the predator, the level of poison eventually gets so high that it will kill them.
Note that SGARs are so toxic that they are banned in California and British Columbia; and many other states, including Massachusetts are working on legislation to do the same. Already, in Massachusetts they are not available in stores and can only be used by pest control companies or purchased online.
There are many ways to control rodents other than with the use of SGARs. The most popular system is via Integrated Pest Management (IPM) which promotes a variety of methods starting with excluding the rodents, and removing their food source.
If you employ a pest control company, tell them you do not want them to use SGARs and and they should be able to offer alternatives.
